The quiet joy of no-fail games
There is a whole category of mobile games with no lose state, and I have come to appreciate them far more than I expected. Lanterns of Vale is a perfect example — you cannot die, you cannot fail, you just explore and light things up at your own pace.
For a long time I dismissed these as too shallow. Then a rough few weeks happened, and I found myself reaching for exactly this kind of calm, pressure-free game to wind down. It turns out that not everything needs a challenge to be worth your time.
The trick these games pull off is keeping you curious without threats. Good ones use exploration, small satisfying puzzles, and atmosphere to pull you forward. Bad ones just feel empty, so the design bar is actually quite high.
If you have never given a no-fail game a real chance, I would nudge you to try one before bed. It reset my mood more than once.
